About the Church

In 1923 a small congregation of Catholics in the town of Market Bosworth began to meet for Mass monthly at rooms in the Red Lion Inn in the town. The masses were celebrated by the parish priest of Earl Shilton, Father Leonard Middleton. In the later 1920s when Earl Shilton had no resident parish priest itself, the communities in the two villages were served by the parish priest of Coalville.

From 1929 to 1931 the mass centre for the village became the home of Mrs Trivett. Again, the support of devout local families was crucial in the sustaining of the Mass in the village, as in Earl Shilton and Hinckley.

The initiative for building a church came from Father Degen, the long standing and vigorous parish priest from Coalville. Land for the church was given by the brother of a Mrs Sutton, Sir Arthur Wheeler. At the time of its opening in 1931, the church had a capacity for 65 people but this increased via extensions over a number of years. Mrs Sutton donated a statue of the Madonna and Child, brought back from a pilgrimage to Lourdes, which is still in situ over the doorway, greeting worshippers as they enter the church

The early names associated with the church in Market Bosworth continue to this day. The church was served faithfully from Earl Shilton for many years by Father Terry Fellowes.

Patron Saints:

Our Lady

Our Lady, the Blessed Virgin Mary, holds a place of unique honor in the Catholic Church as the Mother of God, chosen by divine grace to bear Jesus Christ, the Savior of the world. From the moment of her Immaculate Conception, preserved from original sin, to her faithful acceptance of God’s will at the Annunciation, Mary stands as the model of perfect discipleship, humility, and maternal care. At the foot of the Cross, she was given to all believers as their spiritual mother, and since the earliest days of the Church, Christians have turned to her powerful intercession with trust and love. Honored under many titles throughout the world, in the dedication of our church she is venerated simply as Our Lady, reflecting her universal role as Queen of Heaven and Mother of the Church. Her life of prayer, obedience, and unwavering faith continues to inspire the faithful to follow Christ more closely, and she remains a guiding presence for all who seek her Son.

Saint Gregory

Saint Gregory the Great, also known as Pope Gregory I, is a Doctor of the Church and a key figure in early Catholic history, known for his deep faith, leadership, and contributions to liturgy and doctrine. Born around 540 AD in Rome to a wealthy family, he left public life to become a monk and was elected pope in 590 AD during a time of crisis. As pope, he reformed Church governance and helped develop the chant that bears his name—Gregorian Chant. He also authored influential works like the Dialogues and Pastoral Rule, offering guidance to clergy and emphasizing humility and pastoral care. Gregory’s mission to convert the Anglo-Saxons, led by Saint Augustine of Canterbury, was a lasting success. Canonized soon after his death in 604 AD, he is venerated as the patron saint of musicians, singers, students, and teachers, and his influence remains strong in the Church today. He is remembered as a model of wise and faithful leadership.
